Pressure Washing Your House – Simple Tips for Effective Cleaning

House Cleaning may seem to be a hard task for a lot of homeowners but neither one of us has a choice. Isn't it essential for us to own a pressure washer machine or perhaps pay for home pressure washing services at least twice in three years? Mainly because we need to keep our home clean inside and out, especially after a big storm. Pressure washing could be the very real solution for keeping the tasks done without wasting much of your time. Owning the most high-quality pressure washer is cheaper in the long-run if you simply know the basics of its cleaning maintenance and the capabilities of the machine alone.

Pressure washing is not like what you expected, true that it is effective on house and car cleaning but little did you know it works tremendously different than a magic wand. You expect for it to clean your house or car just by simply waving the nozzle but the truth is its usage is more subtle than that.

First off, the size of your house matters. If you are planning to buy one, an electric type of pressure washer will never be enough to do the job for you if you have a large house since electric pressure washers are more suited on cleaning cars, outdoor furniture and small boats. Thus, a gasoline-powered pressure washer is more suitable for larger buildings and houses.

If your house is particularly dirty, like for example a big storm just came days before, it would be preferable to work with a scrubber and then rinse it off from top to bottom with a pressure washer and a multipurpose cleaner for a more effective cleaning.

Safety Tips for Pressure Washing

Pressure washing is not an easy task, you need full knowledge on the item itself and how it suppose to work along with other cleaners and its accessories.

1. When pressure washing you definitely expect to get wet as this cleaning equipment uses a lot of water. The risk for this, is that when you hold any electric-powered machine and even the cords and wires of the pressure washer, the chances of receiving electrical shock is very high. Be vigilant when working. If you are using any ladder on your cleaning procedures, always make certain that you are in quite a distance with the exterior outlets.

2. Avoid using the power of Pressure Washer on cable wires, outlets and outdoor lights for your own safety.

3. Posture. Do you know that your posture also has an effect on your safety when pressure washing and even just for cleaning? When using the ladder, make sure that it is on the right position at the right angle of your choice. Place your feet comfortably on the ladder base for you to be able to stretch your arms straight out for cleaning. This could be a tricky operation, if you are still unsure of what to do, then it is better to hire a professional and observe, for next time you will have the idea.

4. Pressure Nozzles are of different kinds, try to make a test for every nozzle on a wider space and pick the best one that suits your type of cleaning. Using a fan pattern, make a test on the following distance:

Yellow Nozzle – 15 degrees

Green Nozzle – 25 degrees

White Nozzle – 40 degrees

Insulator Pressure Washers

Insulator Pressure Washers

Insulator pressure washers. It is designed to remove dirt, pollution, contamination, molds and the like from overhead power line insulators with the power on using the low conductivity. To prevent flashovers which can damage power line equipment, cleaning is necessary. An insulator washer unit usually mounts in truck chassis. On electrical context, flashovers are a high voltage shorts to earth across the power line insulators. Improving the power line life, blasting the lines with a stream of high-pressure water removes contamination. Some forms of atmospheric pollution such as smog, rain, dust and salt deposits can cause damage seriously as well as issues on maintenance with the power transmission lines. The moisture absorbing pollutants on the insulators on the power lines can also significantly reduce its effectiveness. Especially for the high voltage, the film of contamination or pollution such dust or dirt that develops on the string surface holds some moisture that a conductive path starts to form. Build-up on these contaminations can develop into growth such as mold & mildew which can cause melt-down, expensive failure and arcing. Preventing chain reaction towards failure, pressure washing cleans it back up to full insulating value. Audio wise a dirty high voltage line sizzles more than a clean high voltage line does.

insulator pressure washers

Components that consists the Insulator Pressure Washer’s basic design are the following:

  • Centrifugal water pump
  • Power source
  • Stainless steel water storage tank
  • Electrical grounds for the washing system and wash gun
  • High pressure dead-man type water wash gun
  • High pressure water hose

Typically, insulator pressure washers have a nozzle pressure between 500-750 psi and a pump pressure of about 1000 PSI. They have about 60 gallons per minute flow rate which is classified as high flow rate necessary in providing fast and consistent cleaning of the insulators.

There are several basic design layouts of insulator washers:

  • Chassis mount for mounting on truck bed
  • Trailer mount for use in electricity substations
  • Helicopter mounted units
  • Aerial platform mount for mounting on trucks that have aerial platforms

Robust design is a must have system with insulator washers as they are used outdoors and often in adverse climates.  The electric towers to be washed must be able to be accessed by the washing unit, so if the towers are in rough terrain or off road, in such condition truck chassis (4x4, 6x4, 6x6) may be required.

Drawbacks in Using Pressure Washers

Drawbacks in Using Pressure Washers

Drawbacks in Using Pressure Washers. A pressure washer is a mechanical device, usually powered by an electric motor, a gasoline engine, or a diesel engine that uses a pump to generate a high-pressure stream of water to clean surfaces. The pump is a positive displacement pump that forces a specific amount of water flow from the outlet. By restricting the amount of water that comes out of the pump, specific dirt is removed. If you did not restrict the water flow on your pump, you are just cleaning using your garden hose - watering the dirt.

pressure washers

Just like any devices, a pressure washer has its advantages and disadvantages. Advertisements and commercials usually promote their product, so as an intelligent consumer you are to find out its flaws and limitations. Here is a list of its disadvantages.

One if its disadvantage is concerned with its power supply. If you are using an electric-powered pressure washer, then no current means no work done. Another disadvantage of electric-powered pressure washer is it cannot operate away from its direct source of energy. And it must have a built-in ground fault circuit interrupter or else you will have your equipment exploding.  On the other hand, gas-powered pressure washer has no problem with fuel unless there is no fuel at all. And although it encourages mobility on your washer, it exhausts gases which can be harmful to you. They are loud plus the added cost of buying gas, oil and spark plugs. They are more difficult to start.

Delicate surfaces cannot withstand the exposure to high pressure output. The main limitation of commercial pressure cleaner machines is that they cannot be used on soft surfaces. Hence, users must use extra care in using power user into them.

The high pressure output poses a problem for the operators as well. The operators must handle the machine with great care. . Operators should be vigilant enough to protect their own bodies from the powerful output of these machines. Both gas-powered and electrical pressure washers can cause damage to the human body if it is exposed to the output for too long.

To add up, pressure washers would tend to demand higher electricity bill when not use properly. The usual reasons of this happening are running the pressure washer without water, running the pressure washer in extended by-pass and cavitation.

Cleaning Solutions for Pressure Washers

Cleaning Solutions for Pressure Washers

Cleaning Solutions for Pressure washers. Pressure washing is one of the convenient and most operational ways to eradicate grease, oil, dirt and salt that has been ground into concrete driveways and walkways. Pressure washing alone is enough to clean most of these surfaces but with the help of chemicals that acts as cleaning solution, pressure washing can be easier and even more effective.

There are several brands and types of cleaning solutions on the market today. The majority of the pressure washer chemicals, and various other chemicals are environmentally friendly and some of them achieve wonderful results and save time and money on labor. Pressure Washer approved cleaning options that are naturally degradable, harmless for humans and simple to use. Before buying any of these chemicals make sure it’s designed for use in a pressure washer or else don’t buy it.

Do not use chemicals that are not pressure washer approved. A non-approved cleaning chemical can be harmful for the environment and if used they can be damaging for the pressure washer components. Use only chemicals that are power washer approved and identify what best suited on the machine and don’t buy or use what are not approved to it.

Before starting a pressure washer job, give your water-soluble pressure washer solutions enough time to completely dissolve before starting the chemical injector. If the chemicals are dissolving fast enough, you may be able to dissolve the pressure washer chemical in warm water, depending on the chemicals you're using.

Below are some tips for an effective cleaning solution and how to maintain your Pressure washer as well.

Never use bleach based products as they damage your pressure washer’s pump parts and equipment. Bleach can damage the seals and o-rings in the gun, wand, hoses and pumps.  To prevent damage to the internal parts, never run bleach in the machine or use detergents not designated for use in pressure washers. Use only products made for pressure washer use and do not use household bleach to wash pressure parts and equipments.

Clean items with an accessory brush and apply detergent. Detergents and accessory brushes increase cleaning effectiveness while reducing cleaning time. Inquire what accessories and detergents are available for when purchasing a pressure washer. Detergents can only be run through pressure washers using a wide spray pattern. In addition, electric pressure washers require a low-pressure setting on the spray wand. Follow your machine's instructions for using detergents, diluting the detergent and if necessary hooking up a chemical injector.

Use Cleaning solution injection system with pressure washer. Most pressure washers have a cleaning solution injection system for such applications such as on-board detergent storage tanks for added convenience. If the machine is not equipped with the downstream chemical injection system you will have to use a standard sprayer. The chemical must be applied under low pressure so that the solution can adhere better to the surface being cleaned. This will allow the formula to react faster and remove the dirt immediately.

Inject the chemical cleaning solution into the washer. Before injecting the chemical solution, check the injector if it is malfunctioning or damaged.  Check all connections and hoses prior to operation before you put the cleaning solution. Once you have the cleaning solutions ready to go, check and make sure that the cleaning solution injection tube is securely attached to the pump and insert the other end into the cleaning solution. If your pressure washer has an on-board storage tank make sure the shut off valve is turned to the on position.

Apply the chemicals then the pressure washer will only siphon cleaning solutions when in low-pressure mode. So a low-pressure soup nozzle must be used. For added effectiveness a rotating scrub brush attachment can be used to apply cleaning solutions. On vertical surfaces always apply cleaning solutions from the bottom up to avoid streaks. Most solutions need to dwell 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing, re-wet as necessary; don’t let dry.

Rinse the Cleaning solution with high pressure. Switch to the high-pressure pattern that’s appropriate for your cleaning project because it is time to rinse the surface. If you’re using an on-board storage tank, turn the shut off valve to the off position. Make sure any remaining solution is flushed from the system. After that rinse the surface from the top down; this again reduces the chance of streaking. Even though most pressure washer cleaning solutions are bio degradable, always flush the surrounding is with plenty of clean water.

In using cleaning solutions for pressure washers, one must be careful and implement necessary precautions in order for the washers to stay for years. Pressure washers cleans and eliminates waste, dirt, grease and etc. As it eliminates these dirts, the dirt installed in them should be washed away as well. They should be clean and maintained to perform as its best condition when you are using them. Use cleaning solutions to make your life smarter, better, faster and wiser.

How Pressure Washer Works?

This machine is run by a motor and works with an air compressor and a garden hose. Its motor powers the air intake system of the machine which creates the air pressure to the built-in tank. The hooked up hose gets all the water from the tank forcing it out to the spray wand (similar to pressure guns mostly used on car washing) which then releases both the strong pressure of water and air that enables effective cleaning.

The higher the water pressure is, the better cleaning it provides. Both kinds of washer cleaners require enough and uninterrupted supply of water in order to work well. A pressure range of 1,300 up to 2,400 psi is usually what this cleaner can provide. Moreover, such machine has similarities to garden hose nozzle which is capable of increasing the speed of the water flow, but what makes it even grander is that, it has the power to create its own velocity and pressure.

The Pressure Washer Cleaner’s nozzles can be upgraded for any particular desired use:

-          Fan pattern nozzles (the water jet can be ejected in a triangular plane)

-          Cone pattern nozzles (emits a thin jet of water which spirals around)

There are Pressure Washers which allows the addition of detergent powder through the water steam for a more powerful cleaning. Injectors are being attached to the machine for this to be possible. The types of injectors are as follows:

-          Downstream injector/ High-pressure injector - releases the chemical whenever water leaves the pump.

-          Upstream injector/ Low-pressure injector – releases the chemical before water enters the pump.

Just like any other machines, pressure washers are also of different kinds. There are ones powered by electric motors and the other kind is with gas engines.

Kinds of Pressure Washer

Electric-powered Pressure Washer -This type of washer provides 1,300 up to 1,400 psi which is best used for light cleaning. This machine has less noise when used, much lighter and cheaper than the other type. This type of washer is most definitely recommended for house use since it is more on light cleaning situations. The machine is more portable than Gas-powered Washers, therefore it is best use on cleaning cars, bikes, garage floors and grills.

Gas-powered Pressure Washer – This type of washer is more of a heavy-duty type. It requires much more water, which is why it provides higher water pressure than the electric-powered one, it can provide more than 3,000 psi making it more ideal for heavy cleaning. This type of Washer Pressure is most certainly recommended for bigger establishments. Therefore, use this machine for wall painting preparation (cleaning the sidings), concrete cleaning, cleaning hard to remove stains from wood decks and stone walls.

Even though this machine is user-friendly and easy-to-use, it still requires its users to be well-informed with how it works before the actual operation. The knowledge of using the right type of gasoline for gas-powered washers and the suitable circuit with the right power voltage for the electric-powered washers must be considered at all times, including the machine’s cleaning maintenance. In order to keep pressure washer’s longer lifespan, thorough care and proper handling of the item must be observed throughout the whole usage.
